Over 30% of UK schools are already using AI tools to "help with school work"

Updated: Apr 9, 2024

Over 30% of UK teachers are already using AI tools, a trend which is accelerating rapidly.

A recent Schools Week survey found that over 30% of UK teachers are actively using AI tools to support their lesson planning and day to day admin (see chart below). Success stories are also emerging from US schools implementing similar solutions, according to a report by the Houston Chronicle.

A breakdown of the results from a recent survey conducted by Schools Week of more than 9,000 teachers and leaders, which found 34% reported using the tools to “help with school work”.

Here are a few exciting ways schools within the UK and US are adopting AI technology:
  • Alleyn's School in London is moving away from traditional homework to a "flipped learning" model, showing how AI is pushing schools to rethink teaching approaches and focus classroom time on interactive learning while using AI responsibly. The school's headteacher, Jane Lunnon remarked, "Instead of homework being a mechanism where you look back at what you've practised, it's about what's coming up. You come to the lesson with your questions."

  • Cottesmore School in West Sussex has appointed an AI chatbot as headteacher to provide calming support in managing the school, showing how AI can take on administrative tasks to assist human teachers and school leaders focus on core education.

  • Alpha School in Texas is supplementing the curriculum with AI apps to provide personalized, adaptive tutoring, allowing educators to focus on teaching hands-on life skills. This further demonstrates how AI can enhance student learning and transforming the teacher's role – without replacing them.
